We have finally integrated with our department wise notification system via twitter. For those who are unfamiliar with twitter, its a widely used, live status update service. The twitter integration with the college system enables any ( authenticated ) proffessors or official staffs to display notices on the college website with their own twitter accounts. In an orthodox system we could have had only one account, and only one person responsible for putting up notifications on the sites (main and department sites), but with this new system, every user (profs./staffs) can create their own (twitter) accounts, and post notifications on their respective department sites via twitter.
Here are few instructions to get you started:
There are three essential nomenclature of twitter -
Following - Teachers / Professors / Official staffs
The Following are the people who are followed by @bvcoenm on twitter.
While, the Followers are the people who follows @bvcoenm. There is no restriction on "Followers". Anyone can follow @bvcoenm.
But there are restrictions on "Following". Following are selected by the webmaster or admin of @bvcoenm. Once they are approved, they can post notifications on college website. Thus such "Following" users are generally Teachers / Professors / Official staffs, who has access to the notification area of college site.
To be followed by @bvcoenm ( and thus, to get authorised ) just apply the following steps:
- Register for a new account on twitter.com (Login, if you already have one)
- Go to http://twitter.com/bvcoenm and click on Follow button. ( Alternatively, you can click on the follow button on this page at top-right corner )
- Email your twitter account "username" to firstname.lastname@example.org OR contact directly with Prof. Sanjay Kadam (I.T. Deaprtment)
- Once @bvcoenm starts "following" you, you can start posting and displaying notifications
Tweets are the actual text notifications that are written and the posted on timeline. The text notifications could be text, or text + url, which comprises a single tweet. There is also a word limitation of 140 characters to every tweet. So your text must be short, precise and upto the point. The tweets are created by following steps:
- Log into your (twitter) account
- While you are in twitter homepage, you will see a blue button at top-right corner, which is meant to compose new tweet.
- Click on that button you will get a textbox to write your notification. While inserting a link, write full urls (with http://)
- After you have written it, click Tweet button. Your notification will automatically get displayed on the college website.
Conventions for posting notifications (i.e. tweets) on bvcoenm:
The conventions are important for the users who are on @bvcoenm following list ( i.e. Teachers / Professors / Official staffs ). You may write a tweet/notification simply as the one below:
I think that everyone should come in white dress code on every thursday.
Now, a tweet like the one above will be considered as "Personal tweet" and hence will not appear on the college website notification system, not because the sentence describes just your view; but because the above tweet has "nothing to identify" that the tweet was meant to be posted on college site. So, to make your tweet appear on college website, you have to add the mentions in the text. Mentions (ex. @bvcoenm) are the ways by which the tweets are tracked or identified. You can use following mentions in your tweet:
|Use||To appear on|
|@bvcoenm||main homepage only (i.e. bvcoenm.org.in)|
|@bvcoeas||applied science department only|
|@bvcoech||chemical engg. department only|
|@bvcoecm||computer engg. department only|
|@bvcoeet||electronics and telec. department only|
|@bvcoeis||instrumentation engg. department only|
|@bvcoeit||information tech. department only|
|@bvcoeme||mechanical engg. department only|
|@bvcoeall||all of the above|
Following will show the notification on the main homepage:
This is to notify that everyone should come in white dress code on every thursday. @bvcoenm
It does not matter where you will write the @bvcoenm. For example this too will appear on main homepage notification:
This is to notify that everyone @bvcoenm should come in white dress code on every thursday.
Now, if you just wanted, your notification to appear on IT department website only you should use @bvcoeit instead. For example, the below tweet will appear on IT department site only:
This is to notify that everyone @bvcoeit should come in white dress code on every thursday.
What if you wanted the notification to appear on both main home page as well as IT department? For this, you may use both of them in your tweet.
This is to notify that everyone @bvcoenm @bvcoeit should come in white dress code on every thursday.
To make it appear on I.T. dept. as well as COMP. dept. and MECH. dept.
This is to notify that everyone should come in white dress code on every thursday. @bvcoeit @bvcoecm @bvcoeme
Thus mentions are selective and can be used to customize the appearance of notifications.
Similarly you can post the notification on all departments including homepage, by using @bvcoeall like this:
Everyone must wear their identity card in the campus permises. @bvcoeall
Please note that, only your "LATEST" notification (i.e. tweet) will appear on the college notification system.
All other old notifications including the latest ones will be available on Latest News page.
Followers - Students / Anyone
Followers has no privilege to display notifications on college site. Followers can only receive notifictions from @bvcoenm.
